I sincerely wanted to be completely finished with "Solamente Una Vez" by now, but things have gotten in the way of writing. There's been a period of cleansing my system, trying to remember why all this writing stuff is so important to me in the first place. Is it some sort of emotional release? A necessity? An act that brings me closer to God? What is the reason I do it? Because it makes me happy? Without a clear-cut reason, I've been drowning in a sense. I've been drowning in confusion and have, therefore, been unproductive. And yet, today, I've had some remarkable revelations about "Solamente" that makes the bigger questions of "Why" and "What for" start to fade.
I've been trudging through "Solamente" scene by scene, trying to unlock the emotional threads and themes that I instinctually placed within the script. Everything is there, I just have to mine it. I've been thinking all day about what the play is about and how I can display that in the scenes I have written. This meant playing around with scene placement and placing different characters in scenes they weren't in. For example, I had two scenes, one between David and Harry (David's boss), and another between David, Harry, and Becky (David's fiance). Now, I tried to fill out the scene between David, Harry, and Becky to figure out just what they were talking about, but realized I had already written the scene, only Becky wasn't in it! So, I took the scene between David and Harry and added Becky into it and the material starting working on a whole other level. Just having Becky in the scene, not necessarily saying anything, added this different dynamic and made things heat up. It gave the scene more purpose rather than just laying out the "themes" of the play. There is action to it. Adding Becky to other scenes, or substituting other characters has really set the rest of the play into focus. I feel that I'm headed on the way to completing a very strong draft of this play. Who knows, I still might make my goal of finishing the play "by the end of the week."
