I've been struggling with this question for a few days now as my process of adapting Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" has hit a bit of a snag. I found myself getting bogged down in plot and making things "match" the source material, rather than really trying to find my own reasons for writing the play. What makes an adaptation necessary? This is a question that must be answered on a personal level for the adaptor... So, why is writing "The Brothers Caramillo" important to me? Why is it necessary? Well... There's the problem. I can't articulate why it's necessary, even though I feel a tremendous anxiety and energy for writing the play. So, I find myself getting stuck and the images for the play becoming stilted and unformed.
I find myself now searching for the answer to the questions: WHY? and FOR WHAT? I feel on the verge of breaking through, but until that point arrives, I'm going to just continue writing what I feel needs to be written and see what emerges.

I totally know that phase.
For my senior thesis, I wrote a stage adaptation of "Blue Eyes, Black Hair" by Marguerite Duras.
Probably what you need right now is to get away from the book itself and just kinda sit with the themes and what is jumping at you about this play. I think the questions you are asking are good. Let them simmer a bit andyou'll find it !
